Director: Steven Soderbergh
Cast: Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, Matthew McConaughey
In lesser hands, this could’ve been as ridiculous as male stripping, however with a talented director and an appealing cast, this movie is able to work as a good story and as eye candy.
Entrepreneur and savvy businessman “Magic” Mike is making a good living by working odd jobs in the morning and baring it all at a grimy, yet lively strip club at night. Working under the leather-clad cowboy Dallas (McConaughey), Mike makes easy money as a chiseled, agile piece of beef. However, Mike looks at it as a humorous way to make enough money to achieve his dreams of owning his own furniture business. While working a construction job, Mike meets Adam (Pettyfer) and takes him under his wing as a young stripper. Everything’s fun and light until Adam becomes intertwined with the darker forces of the underworld and becomes in over his head.
The title character is played with perfection by the bankable Channing Tatum. He is able to radiate charisma off the screen and make Mike the kind of person you’d want to know and be friends with. He’s an authentically good person. The love story isn’t plausible and there’s not much as far as a intricate storyline is concerned, but the characters and performances are what make the movie entertaining. Since male stripping in itself already seems ridiculous, this is about the best a filmmaker could do with the source material. Also included in the lineup of junk-thrusting, ass-baring men are “True Blood’s” hunky Joe Manganiello, “White Collar’s” Matt Bomer, “C.S.I.: Miami’s” Adam Rodriguez, and intrimidating wrestler Kevin Nash. Like a Bachelorette Party, watchingMagic Mikeis the kind of event where women are able to let loose, laugh, and overall enjoy themselves.
